Tony Ferguson Slams Khabib Nurmagomedov Over Irish MMA Remarks
Khabib Nurmagomedov stirred controversy earlier this month with his comments about Irish MMA. As a former rival of Conor McGregor, his remarks came as little surprise to many. The former interim lightweight champion, known as “El Cucuy,” issued a fiery response to Nurmagomedov’s comments on X (formerly Twitter) earlier this week. Ferguson didn’t hold back, accusing the Russian star of being unqualified to critique the sport given his “padded” record.

According to Ferguson, it’s easy to criticize from the sidelines, branding Nurmagomedov a “coward” for speaking about the sport without being actively involved as a fighter. While the two never shared the cage despite being scheduled to fight five times between 2015 and 2020, their rivalry remains one of the most storied in MMA history.
Unfortunately, each of their five proposed bouts was canceled due to injuries, illnesses, or the COVID-19 pandemic, with the last attempt falling apart ahead of UFC 249. That year, Khabib retired undefeated, leaving many fans wondering what could have been had the two ever met in the octagon.

While Khabib has transitioned into coaching—set to corner Usman Nurmagomedov later this month at PFL: Road to Dubai—Tony Ferguson remains active as a fighter. The 40-year-old, however, is currently on an eight-fight losing streak, his most recent defeat coming in August via a first-round submission loss to Michael Chiesa.
Post-fight, Ferguson hinted at retirement but later reversed course, expressing plans to compete in 2025. Despite his struggles, “El Cucuy” continues to maintain his fiery demeanor and willingness to speak his mind, especially when it comes to his longtime rival.
